Everything you need to know about car rental at Alicante Airport
You’ll need a valid driving license (held for at least 1 year), a credit card in the main driver’s name, and a passport or national ID card. International visitors may need an International Driving Permit depending on their country of origin. EU license holders can drive with their national license.
The minimum age is typically 21 years old, though some companies allow 18+ drivers with additional fees. Drivers under 25 may be subject to a young driver surcharge (usually €15–25 per day). Certain vehicle categories like luxury or large SUVs may have higher minimum age requirements (25+).
Certain car rental kiosks are located just outside of the main terminal building. Other companies offer shuttle services to their car parks, which are typically 2–5 minutes away. Follow signs for “Car Rental” or “Alquiler de Coches” after collecting your luggage. Return is usually at the same location, with clear signage directing you to the rental car return area.
Basic insurance (CDW – Collision Damage Waiver) is usually included but comes with an excess/deductible. You can purchase additional coverage to reduce or eliminate the excess: Super CDW, Theft Protection, and Personal Accident Insurance. Many companies also offer roadside assistance and tire/windscreen coverage. Check if your credit card or travel insurance provides rental car coverage.
Most companies operate a “Full to Full” policy – you receive the car with a full tank and return it full. This is usually the most economical option. Some offer “Full to Empty” where you pay for a full tank upfront but can return it empty. There are several petrol stations near the airport for convenient refueling before return.
Cross-border travel within the EU is generally permitted, but you must inform the rental company in advance. Additional fees may apply (typically €50–100). Some restrictions apply to certain countries or vehicle categories. Popular destinations from Murcia include Portugal, France, and Andorra. Always check the rental agreement for specific terms and ensure you have proper insurance coverage.
Most bookings can be cancelled free of charge up to 24–48 hours before pickup. Modifications (dates, times, car category) are usually possible online or by phone, subject to availability. Prepaid bookings may have different cancellation terms. Always check the specific terms of your booking and consider purchasing cancellation insurance for added flexibility.
Common additional fees include: young driver surcharge (under 25), additional driver fee (€5–15/day), GPS rental (€8–12/day), child seats (€8–15/day), and one-way rental fees if dropping off at a different location. Airport surcharges are usually included in quoted prices. Always review the total cost including all fees before confirming your booking.
