When did Murcia Airport open?
Región de Murcia International Airport opened on 15 January 2019, with an official inauguration by King Felipe VI. Often called Corvera Airport, it took over the region’s civilian passenger flights from Murcia–San Javier. San Javier continued as a military airfield, so the two names refer to different airports rather than different terminals at the same site.
The first commercial arrival was Ryanair flight RYR1824 from East Midlands, which landed at 10:25 on opening day. Airport firefighters welcomed the Boeing 737-800 with a water salute. The opening network connected Murcia with the United Kingdom, Ireland and Belgium, with further routes planned for the first summer season.
A purpose-built passenger airport
The new airport gave the region a dedicated civilian facility. At its opening, Aena described a terminal of more than 37,000 square metres and a 3,000-metre runway. Check-in and baggage reclaim were arranged on the ground floor, with security and boarding on the upper level.
For holidaymakers, the airport provides an arrival point for Murcia city, Cartagena, the Mar Menor and the wider Costa Cálida. When looking back at old travel guides or bookings, remember that references to Murcia–San Javier describe the previous passenger airport. Check that your current booking shows RMU for Corvera.
An award-winning airport in its size category
Murcia received an ACI ASQ Customer Experience Award for 2025 as a best airport in Europe in the category handling fewer than two million passengers a year. Aena announced the result on 24 February 2026. It was the airport’s fourth win in this category, following awards for 2021, 2022 and 2023.
The awards draw on passenger surveys covering the airport experience, including cleanliness, facilities, staff and security queues. This is recognition within a specific region and passenger-volume category. Aena’s announcement also records improvements made during 2025, including renewed lighting, accessible toilets for people with an ostomy, a book-exchange point and changes to the shops and food outlets.
