Aledo Castle and Torre del Homenaje

Aledo Castle occupies the highest part of Aledo, where the medieval town overlooks the Guadalentín valley and the foothills around Sierra Espuña. The surviving Torre del Homenaje is the site’s defining feature and can be seen well before you reach the old centre.

The square keep stands within the former fortified enclosure. Although the wider castle has changed greatly over time, the tower preserves three internal levels and a roof terrace. Its ground floor once held a water cistern, while the upper floors served defensive and storage roles.

Inside the Torre del Homenaje

The tower now works as an interpretation centre. Displays explain the development of medieval Aledo, the defensive system around the settlement and the influence of the Order of Santiago. Historic marks can still be seen on parts of the interior walls, and the construction combines Christian military architecture with building methods associated with the area’s Andalusi past.

The roof terrace is the reward for the climb. Orientation panels help identify Aledo, the Guadalentín valley and the surrounding mountains; on a clear day the views extend a considerable distance beyond the town. Combine the tower with Santa María la Real Church and a walk through the compact historic centre.
