Granary Deposit

Granary Deposit is the English name used here for Alhama de Murcia’s Pósito Municipal, an 18th-century civic granary in the town’s historic centre. Its main role was to regulate the cereal trade, although it was also connected with loans from public funds. Grain stored after plentiful harvests could help support local agriculture when supplies were scarce.

The two-storey building is rectangular and constructed from brick and rendered masonry. Its most distinctive space is the ground floor, where ribbed vaulting divided the hall into smaller areas used to store grain. The upper floor is brighter and arranged around a series of pillars, creating a more open interior.

From grain store to exhibition centre

El Pósito was restored in 2006 and adapted as a municipal exhibition centre. The old storage spaces now provide an atmospheric setting for changing art, history and cultural displays, while the building itself remains an important example of Alhama’s 18th-century “grain architecture”.

What you find inside depends on the current programme: the photographs on this page record previous displays and should not be treated as a permanent collection. The exterior can still be appreciated as part of a walk through Alhama de Murcia’s historic centre.

Plan your visit

The exhibition centre is not continuously open. It admits visitors only while a temporary exhibition is running, using seasonal afternoon hours from Tuesday to Saturday. Check the official agenda or call the centre before travelling, especially outside a published exhibition period.

The official tourism listing records free admission, although an individual event may set its own capacity or access conditions.
