Cabo de Palos Lighthouse

Cabo de Palos Lighthouse stands on the rocky headland at the eastern edge of Cabo de Palos. Its tall stone tower is the village’s defining landmark and an easy focal point for a walk around this stretch of Mediterranean coast.

The present lighthouse replaced an earlier watchtower. Construction began in 1863 and its light was first shown on 31 January 1865. The building was designed for its navigational role, while its substantial base also served as a school for lighthouse keepers for a period.

Visiting the lighthouse

Visitors can walk freely to the esplanade at the base of the lighthouse. The open headland gives broad views towards La Manga and along the rocky Cabo de Palos shoreline, and a coastal path links the area with small coves closer to the village.

Access inside the lighthouse is different from visiting the exterior. Interior entry is offered only through separately scheduled guided tours, so it should not be assumed to be available when you arrive. There is free parking close to the lighthouse. The landscape is exposed, with limited shade away from the buildings, so water and sun protection are useful in warm weather. The path becomes rougher beyond the paved areas around the base.
