San Patricio Collegiate Church

San Patricio Collegiate Church stands on Plaza de España in the historic centre of Lorca. Its elaborate stone façade commands the square, while the much larger building behind it rewards a closer visit.

Despite its cathedral-like scale, this is a collegiate church. Construction began in 1536 and continued into the late 18th century, following a design associated with Jerónimo Quijano. Its dedication recalls the Battle of Los Alporchones, fought on Saint Patrick’s Day in 1452.

A monumental façade and Renaissance interior

The exterior is best appreciated from several points around the square. Columns, sculpted figures and layered stonework draw the eye upwards; the wider side view reveals how far the church extends behind its entrance.

Inside, three naves, side chapels, a choir and an ambulatory give the church a spacious, carefully ordered Renaissance character. The contrast between the intricate frontage and the interior’s architectural rhythm is one of the reasons to go beyond a photograph of the entrance.

Plan the visit around tourist opening hours, since the church remains a place of worship. If the tower or any particular space is essential to your visit, confirm access directly before buying a ticket.
