Spain Public Holidays 2027: A Murcia Travel Guide

T

Total Travel Guide

Planning a trip to Spain in 2027? Check the public holiday dates alongside your flights and accommodation, especially if you are heading to Murcia, Cartagena or the coast.

A public holiday can change the rhythm of a visit. Shops may close, transport may follow a different timetable and a quiet city break can coincide with a busy local celebration. It can also be a lovely opportunity to experience a destination while local families are enjoying time together.

This guide covers the main Spanish holiday dates, then takes a closer look at the Region of Murcia, including its confirmed regional calendar, selected municipal holidays and opportunities for long weekends.

Calendar checked: 6 October 2026. Murcia’s regional and municipal dates below come from its published 2027 calendar. If you are visiting another part of Spain, check that autonomous community and municipality too.

How public holidays work in Spain

Spain does not have one identical holiday calendar for every town. National holidays form the foundation, autonomous communities make regional choices, and municipalities have two local holidays.

In Murcia, the 2027 calendar contains 12 dates applying throughout the region, plus two local dates in each municipality. Those local dates matter: a holiday in Murcia city does not automatically apply in Cartagena or San Javier.

You may also see Spanish public holidays called bank holidays in English. In Spain, the terms to look for are festivos and calendario laboral. A public holiday calendar is separate from school holiday dates and from the full programme of a local festival.

Main Spain public holiday dates in 2027

The following is a quick overview of the main national holiday dates and widely recognised celebrations. Regional choices and Sunday substitutions mean it is not a complete calendar for every destination.

An August detail to watch: Murcia has chosen 9 June instead of the Monday substitute following the Assumption holiday. That means Monday 16 August is not a region-wide public holiday. It is, however, a local holiday in some municipalities, so check where you will actually be staying.

The confirmed dates are published in the official Murcia 2027 holiday calendar.

Local public holidays in Murcia: selected destinations

The Region of Murcia and the municipality of Murcia are different things. The region includes 45 municipalities, each with its own two local holidays. Here are several destinations visitors may need to check.

All dates in this table are for 2027 and apply within the named municipal boundaries. For the other municipalities, consult the local table on page three of the BORM calendar.

If your accommodation is in a coastal resort or smaller village, check its municipality rather than relying only on the resort name. A nearby town can have a different holiday calendar.

Easter in Murcia in 2027

Maundy Thursday falls on 25 March and Good Friday on 26 March. Together with the weekend, they create a four-day break from 25–28 March for people who normally have Saturdays and Sundays off.

Easter is a time to check procession arrangements, access to the historic centre and any changes to opening hours. Confirm the 2027 programme with the relevant tourist office before planning around a particular procession.

Easter Monday, 29 March, is not a region-wide public holiday in Murcia. It is a local holiday in some municipalities, including Los Alcázares. Murcia city has a local holiday on Tuesday 30 March instead. This is a good example of why a general Spain calendar alone is not enough.

Long weekends and puentes in Murcia in 2027

A puente, literally a bridge, is an extended break created by taking time off between a public holiday and the weekend. The bridging day is not automatically a public holiday.

For someone who normally works Monday to Friday, the regional calendar offers these useful combinations:

  • 1–3 January: a three-day weekend starting on New Year’s Day.
  • 19–21 March: a three-day weekend for St Joseph’s Day.
  • 25–28 March: four days over Easter, combining Thursday and Friday holidays with the weekend.
  • 9–12 October: four days if Monday 11 October is taken as leave, bridging to Tuesday’s holiday.
  • 30 October–1 November: a three-day weekend ending on All Saints’ Day.
  • 4–8 December: five days if Tuesday 7 December is taken as leave between Monday and Wednesday’s holidays.

The Wednesday holiday on 9 June can also be extended by taking adjacent days off. Local holidays may create additional opportunities depending on the municipality.

Labour Day and Christmas Day fall on Saturdays in 2027. Murcia’s regional calendar does not add Monday replacement holidays for them. These combinations describe the calendar, rather than guaranteeing time off for everyone working in tourism, hospitality or other services.

What public holidays mean for visitors

Shops and supermarkets

Check the individual branch’s opening hours, particularly if you arrive on a holiday and need supplies for self-catering accommodation. Opening arrangements can vary by location and type of shop. Buy essentials ahead of time when possible.

Restaurants and accommodation

Make reservations for meals that are important to your trip and confirm arrival instructions with your accommodation. A holiday can be a busy trading day for one business and a closure day for another.

Museums, attractions and transport

Check each attraction’s own holiday hours and the timetable for your route. Our guide to getting around Murcia can help you plan your journeys. Leave extra time if a celebration affects roads or access to a city centre. The public holiday list does not tell you whether a particular museum, bus service or tour is operating.

Planning a Murcia break

Use the dates as a starting point for exploring the region. You might combine Murcia city with a visit to Cartagena, plan a coastal stay around the Mar Menor, or leave time for an inland destination such as Caravaca de la Cruz.

Once you have chosen your base, check its local calendar and build your sightseeing around confirmed opening hours. That small extra check can make a holiday weekend much easier to enjoy.
