Los Alcázares

Los Alcázares is one of the main towns on the Mar Menor and is built around the appeal of the lagoon itself. Its long seafront promenade, shallow-water beaches and flat, easy-going layout make it particularly well suited to families, walkers and travellers looking for a straightforward coastal base rather than a dramatic historic town.

The atmosphere is generally relaxed and practical. Days here tend to revolve around beach time, gentle evening walks, watersports and the convenience of having cafés, shops and accommodation close to the shore. It may not have the monumental heritage of Cartagena or Murcia, but for a simple Mar Menor stay, Los Alcázares does what it needs to do very well.

Travel Tips & Planning

Essential information for your Los Alcázares visit

Best Time to Visit

Los Alcázares is mainly a Mar Menor beach and promenade destination, so the warm months matter more here than for inland towns.

  • Spring (Apr-Jun): 18-24°C, good for promenade walks, cycling and early beach days.
  • Summer (Jul-Sep): 25-32°C, peak beach season; July and August are busiest.
  • Autumn (Oct-Nov): 20-27°C, warm, quieter and often excellent for easy coastal stays.
  • Winter (Dec-Feb): 13-19°C, quiet and better for walking than beach-focused trips.

Getting Around

The promenade and beach areas are easy to explore on foot or by bike. A car is mainly useful for day trips or airport transfers.

  • Walking: Free and best for the promenade, beaches and town centre.
  • Bus: Allow around €1.50-€3 for local/interurban journeys around the Mar Menor.
  • Taxi: Around €7-15 for local hops; more for airport or neighbouring town journeys.
  • Car rental: Around €30-55 per day in season; useful for Cartagena, Murcia or wider Mar Menor trips.

Budget Planning

Los Alcázares can be inexpensive if you focus on the beach and promenade. Peak-season stays, watersports and seafront dining increase the budget.

  • Budget: €40-65 per day, using beaches, walks and casual meals.
  • Mid-range: €75-115 per day, allowing for watersports, better meals and seasonal accommodation.
  • Luxury: €140+ per day, especially in July-August or with sea-view accommodation.
  • Attraction costs: Beaches and promenade are free; allow around €10-20 per day for bike hire or €20-50 for watersports depending on activity.
