Águilas

Águilas is a coastal town in the south of the Murcia region, set between the Mediterranean Sea and a backdrop of low, rugged hills. With a long seafront, several beaches within walking distance of the centre, and a working port, it has retained a strong connection to the sea while remaining less crowded than many better-known resorts along the Spanish coast.

The town’s history stretches back to Roman times, though much of what visitors see today reflects its development in the 18th and 19th centuries. Águilas grew in importance as a defensive outpost, a role symbolised by the hilltop Castle of San Juan de las Águilas, built to protect the coastline from pirate attacks. Later, the arrival of the railway transformed the town into a key export point for minerals from inland Murcia, traces of which can still be seen in its port and industrial heritage.

Today, Águilas combines everyday Spanish life with a laid-back seaside atmosphere. The town centre is compact and walkable, with plazas, cafés, and shops clustered around the harbour and main streets. The coastline offers a mix of sandy beaches, coves, and clear waters, while nearby natural areas such as Cabo Cope provide opportunities for walking and enjoying quieter stretches of coast. Águilas is also well known locally for its Carnival, one of the most important in the region, which brings the town to life each year with parades, music, and elaborate costumes.
